Telecommunications in Kazakhstan in the 1990s were developed on the basis of the telecommunications of the former USSR. Then, at the beginning of the new millennium, the process was streamlined by the state programme based on the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On the Concept of Development of the Telecommunications Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan" of 4 December 2001, according to which the demonopolisation of the market began in 2004 and private players appeared along with state companies. Today the communications industry in Kazakhstan is represented by 3 areas: postal services, mobile communications and the internet.
