The article examines the key stages of the forming trade contacts between Volga Bulgarians and Finno-Ugrians in 8th — early 15th centuries. These ties were actively influenced by the military and political events of the Middle Ages, the existence of Volga Bulgaria, Rus and the “trade war” between them at the end of the 11th — the beginning of the 13th centuries, the Mongol invasion, periods of centralization and “great troubles” in the Golden Horde in the 14th — 15th centuries — all of this influenced the reorientation of trade, the search for new markets for goods and new forms of interaction.
