© 2020 KIIE Goal: evaluate the short-term spatial effects of technological innovation costs. Methods: Moran and Geary global spatial correlation indices, Moran local spatial correlation index, econometric model with spatial auto regression lag, econometric model with spatial interaction in errors, maximum likelihood estimation. Results: The transition from competition to cooperation of regions in terms of costs for technological innovations, local spatial clusters of regions, and a conditional β-divergence in the growth rate of costs for technological innovations for the short term were revealed. The connection between investment and the cost of technological innovation was found. The connection between the number of University students, the number of patents issued and the Internet usage in organizations with the cost of technological innovations was not confirmed. Scientific novelty: spatial correlation and convergence of expenditures on technological innovations in cross-sections of Russian regions from 2009 to 2017 were measured for the short term. Practical significance: the main conclusions of the article can be used in scientific and practical activities in the policy formulation to stimulate the costs of technological innovations.
