© 2020 ACM. The relevance of the problem under study is in the ongoing developing process of interaction between different countries, peoples and cultures. The purpose of the article is to show that improving sociolinguistic competence is an essential condition for the development of student communication in the context of global digitalization. The leading methods of studying the problem are cultural and civilizational approaches that allow us to consider the problem from a new perspective, giving an appropriate assessment of modern realities, draw conclusions and make suggestions. The article reveals the essence of such concepts as "intercultural communication", "sociolinguistic competence", "social media" and "intercultural competence". The role in the development of personal communication that makes it possible for a person to integrate in the modern multicultural world is disclosed. The work also illustrates the process of multicultural education in Kazan Federal University. The results of the work can be useful in the practice of university education, contributing to the organization of continuous multicultural education.
