The article presents literature data on the metabolism and biological role of vitamin D in the body, information on its role in maintenance of phosphorus-calcium homeostasis, mineralization and skeletal growth processes, as well as its pleiotropic effects and mechanisms of their implementation. Characteristics of vitamin D metabolism in the mother–placenta–fetus system and consequences of maternal deficiency for the child are highlighted. The significance of vitamin D deficiency in diseases development and modern views on the optimal level and criteria for its deficiency are presented. The variability of the pharmacodynamic response to vitamin D intake in different individuals to achieve a sufficient level in blood andbone and non-bone effects are shown.
