Sustainable development underlies environmental governance in all jurisdictions, but its legal status remains controversial. The doctrine raises the question of whether it is a moral or legal category and, if the latter, then what is the legal nature of the generated international obligations? The article ex-amines the international legal status of sustainable development, the instruments of its consolidation and expression, the relationship with international obligations in respect to all states - erga omnes.
