Abstract:
Relevance of the problem stated in the article is related to selecting and mastering the use of new methods of teaching reading in English to Russian students. The article aims to identify new ways of developing reading skills of the students at the senior stage of learning the English language. The leading methods are analysis of scientific works, empirical and experimental data, method of involved observation, modeling and experimental method. The experimental method is aimed to search new means of teaching reading to higher school students. The article presents an attempt to use the text materials from newspapers and magazines in English for improving reading skills with understanding of the basic content of the text. The experiment has been conducted on the basis of Grade 9 of the secondary school in Kazan (Russia). In it two groups of 13 people participated. On comparing the percentage of the quality of the first lesson of the experiment (34 %) and the last one (96 %) it can be concluded that the students have achieved good results in reading with understanding of the core content of the texts from newspapers and magazines, despite the fact that they did not own these skills before.
