The microgranular calcite of cement is dissolved in bioclastic limestones with the interstitial cement. Owing to the presence of protein-type material, shells and microbial clots are not subjected to leaching. In contrast, shells of the primary aragonite composition are easily and rapidly dissolved. Consequently, the newly formed carbonate makes up additional cement in the rock matrix.
