dc.description.abstract The study provides holistic insights on the Russian business communities’ corporate sustainability practices based on a representative survey (n = 400) and semi-structured interviews (n = 30) with Russian senior executives across various sectors, scales and cities. The given research added to the scarce academic debates on Russian corporate sustainability practices by providing managers’ perspectives on these practices in retrospective and prospective terms. The study revealed their reflections on the key rationales and drivers for the implementation and enhancement of sustainability practices, opportunities and barriers associated with adopting sustainability-led initiatives and their self-perceived role towards securing a better environment. Another unique contribution is the authors’ typology of the Russian enterprises into ‘Green’ and ‘Brown’ clusters based on companies’ environmental performance. The findings show that the most popular sustainability initiatives include water metering devices, paper saving, duplex printing, separate waste collection, heat and lighting regulation, and the collection of batteries, light bulbs and wastepaper. The key rationale behind implementing these initiatives is the environmental care factor. The main benefits are seen in contributions to environmental improvement and the creation of a positive corporate image. The key barriers include the lack of governmental supportive measures, economic and technical difficulties. Therefore, tax incentives and other state administrative support could become the most important measures for promoting environmental initiatives in Russian firms.
