Concerning the dynamic load impact on development of landslide processes

© 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, London. The paper addresses a matter of assessing the impact of dynamic loads on the possibility of landslide processes occurrence. A land plot on the right bank of the Volga River in Ulyanovsk was chosen as an example. Currently, a high-rise residential complex is being built there. Based on theoretical and practical studies, it was established that one of the reasons behind the landslide at the area under consideration was pile driving during foundation construction. According to an analysis of literature, currently, both in Russia and abroad, there are no regulatory documents that would regulate the method of assessing the impact of dynamic loads on stability of soil masses. The existing studies usually address only specific problems. It is shown through the example above that, to solve such problems, the use of comprehensive assessment taking into account both the type and distance to the dynamic load source as well as the specifics of the relevant soil mass is a promising method. Several international standards dealing with the matter of vibration impact assessment to a greater or lesser extent are taken as the basis for the calculations. Field works confirm that the calculated boundaries of the area of vibration impact from pile driving correlate well with the data of opinion polls and inspections of damaged buildings and structures. The study shows the need for national regulatory documents that would regulate allowable distances from dynamic load sources to slopes with a risk of a land-slide.
