The article examines one of the topical problems of the process of learning a foreign language-the use of multimedia technologies, which helps to solve the problem of optimizing foreign language teaching for students of the humanities on the path of intensification and rational organization of the educational process. The authors clarify the pedagogical nature, content and structure of the process of using multimedia technologies in the process of teaching a foreign language to specialists in the humanities in a university. The article highlights the advantages of multimedia technologies in the process of teaching a foreign language to humanitarian students. The technique of combining traditional and new multimedia technologies is considered. By using digital information, such as graphic image and audio as well as vedio, the integration of situational teaching of foreign language and modern multimedia technology enriches the content of foreign language teaching, which provides a rich and colorful environment for English learner. It can stimulate emotional students' experience and enhance their willings of participating in interacting with classmates by reasonably creating a situation around content of courses in teaching. Criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of the learning process are defined: target, informative, motivational, effective criteria and optimality criteria. New approaches to the creation and use of multimedia technologies are proposed.
